December: The Start of Winter Action
Northern Lights: December is one of the best months to see the aurora borealis, as the long, dark nights provide perfect conditions for spotting the lights.
Activities:
Ski or snowboard at the Ruka Ski Center, just 15-20 minutes from your accommodation. The slopes are perfect for all levels, from beginners to advanced. Skiing is guaranteed as some slopes open as early as October.
Try snowmobiling on the frozen lakes and forests. (Note: The age limit for snowmobiles is strictly 16, as these are powerful machines and please note that early December is unsure with snow as it’s early winter right after autumn)
Go hiking or snowglideshoeing if there is enough snow in Riisitunturi National Park, where the white covered trees create a magical winter landscape.
After a day of action, warm up in the sauna at your accommodation and watch for the northern lights.
January & February: The Heart of Winter Adventure
Northern Lights: January and February offer some of the darkest nights of the year, making them ideal times to see the aurora borealis.
Activities:
Ski or snowboard at Ruka Ski Center, or try sledging on the snowy slopes after ski hours riding the gondola up and sledging down.
Take a snowmobile safari through the frozen forests and lakes, exploring the winter wonderland at high speed.
Go snow glide shoeing in Oulanka National Park, where the frozen river and snow-covered forests create a stunning winter landscape.
Visit the frozen waterfalls at Korouoma, about an hour’s drive from your accommodation, where the ice formations are truly spectacular.
Warm up in the sauna after a day of adventure and enjoy a warm drink made from local spruce-based ingredients.
One of the most magical sights in the world is the full moon under a bright sky in deep winter that is January & February. Riisitunturi especially is just straight out of a fairytale and a sight that even AI could not create.
March & April: Late Winter Thrills
Northern Lights: While the nights start to get shorter in March and April, the aurora borealis is still visible, especially in the early evening.
Optimal Snow Conditions: March usually has the most snow, making it the perfect time for winter activities. April marks the transition to late winter, with milder temperatures but still plenty of snow for outdoor adventures.
